Women's voluntarism and philanthropy in pre-revolutionary Russia: building a civil society

This article examines the significant role of women’s voluntarism and philanthropy in building civil society in pre-revolutionary Russia. The author highlights their efforts in addressing societal needs and fostering community engagement, which implicitly or explicitly contributed to the development of a nascent civil society outside of state control.
