This study explores the evolving relationship between institutional philanthropy and popular organizing in Africa. While institutional philanthropy has historically shied away from activist spaces, it is now cautiously engaging. The research, based on insights from African social movement activists, highlights that the how of engagement is critical, not just the whether. It uncovers challenges and limitations, revealing critical concerns about philanthropic orientation, ideology, and practices. The paper calls for radical mindset shifts from institutional philanthropy regarding power, control, accountability, and impact, offering practical observations for consideration.
